CARIS HPD : Command Reference : V : Validation : S-58 Edition 7.0 ENC Validation Workflow : Step 3: S-58 Minimum Validation Requirements

Step 3: S-58 Minimum Validation Requirements

To help ensure that ENC datasets meet the S-58 Edition 7.0 minimum validation requirements, run the following QC Tests to look for all possible S-58 critical errors, errors and warnings.

S-58 critical errors are now considered mandatory. An ENC dataset that passes all S-58 critical error tests meets the IHO S‑58 Edition 7.0 minimum validation requirements and it can be safely used in an ECDIS.

Critical errors

Check for S-58 Edition 7.0 critical errors:

1. Select and run the S-58 Critical Errors test.

2. Review the validation report.

S-58 Critical Errors: FAIL is reported if any test fails and critical errors are detected. Correct them and repeat the test until all issues are resolved.

S-58 Critical Errors: PASS is reported if all tests pass and no critical errors are detected.

Errors

Next, it is recommended that you check for S-58 Edition 7.0 errors and correct them where applicable.

S-58 errors are not considered mandatory. As long as an ENC dataset passes all S-58 critical error tests, it meets the IHO S-58 Edition 7.0 minimum validation requirements and it can be safely used in an ECDIS.

1. Run the S-58 Errors QC Test,

2. Review the validation report:

S-58 Errors: FAIL is reported if any test fails and errors are detected. Correct the errors then repeat the test.

It is possible that some issues reported as errors may be acceptable in some circumstances and can therefore be ignored.

S-58 Errors: PASS is reported if all tests pass and no errors are detected.

Warnings

It is good practice to check for S-58 Edition 7.0 warnings and correct them where necessary:

S-58 warnings are not considered mandatory. As long as an ENC dataset passes all S-58 critical error tests, it meets the IHO S-58 Edition 7.0 minimum validation requirements and it can be safely used in an ECDIS.

1. Select and execute the new S-58 Warnings QC Test:

2. Review the validation report:

S-58 Warnings: FAIL is reported if any test fails and warnings are detected. Check them and, where practical, correct those that are legitimate issues then repeat the test.

It is possible that some issues reported as warnings may be acceptable in some circumstances and can therefore be ignored.

S-58 Warnings: PASS is reported if all tests pass and no warnings are detected.

Now re-check all aspects of the ENC:

It is not expected that edits made in Step 3 will introduce new issues, but it is best to confirm it by re-running all tests from step 1 on.

It is essential that the S-58 Critical Errors test passes.

Some S-58 errors and warnings can be ignored.
