Create and edit line and area features using the existing edges of a another feature, called the “grabbed” feature. The edges of the grabbed feature are duplicated and used to form the feature currently being edited or digitized.

The layer that contains the feature geometry you want to grab is called the snap/grab target. See Set as Snap/Grab Target.

Procedure: Digitize Using Grab

1. Set the snap/grab target if it is not the current layer.

2. Select the layer on which to digitize the new feature.

3. Select the Create Line Feature or Create Area Feature command.

4. If necessary, select the feature acronym and the set the attributes for the new feature.

5. When the digitize cursor is displayed, start to digitize the new feature.

6. select the Grab command.

You can select the Grab command at any time while digitizing.

The cursor changes to indicate that the Grab command is active. ()

7. Select the edge in the target layer.

All vertices on the selected edge become active.

8. [Optional] Select other edges of the grabbed object.

You cannot skip edges. All edges between the first and last selected are used.

The command draws the shortest path between the last grabbed line or digitized point to the most recently grabbed line or digitized point.

9. To finish digitizing, select the End Line or the End Area command.

The feature is created using the geometry of the grabbed features.

Procedure: Edit Using Grab

1. Set the snap/grab target if it is not the current layer.

2. Select the feature layer that contains the feature to be edited.

3. Select the feature to be modified,

4. Select the Edit Mode command.

5. Select a vertex on the feature.

6. Select the Redigitize Edges command.

If the selected vertex is not a start or end point, it is removed when you use the Redigitize Edges command.

The line segment to be modified is indicated by a dotted line. This segment will be replaced with the grabbed feature plus any necessary connecting lines.

7. Select the Grab command.

8. Click an edge of the feature you want to grab.

If you grab a line feature, a connecting line is drawn from the highlighted segment of the selected feature to the closest end point of the line grabbed.

If you grab an area feature, connecting lines are drawn to the origin point of the selected edge. The new area will only be included if the connecting lines between the updated feature and the grabbed feature do not cross. If they do, the change to the selected feature is reverted when the command ends.

9. To finish, select the Edit Mode command a second time.

The feature is updated according to the geometry of the grabbed feature.
