CARIS HPD : HPD® User Guide : Working with Data : Text

Text

You can create and manage text features on source usages or HOB files. These text features can later be used in various products.

Text features can be added to a dataset in Source Editor.

You can create layers or select text features using text as the feature type. You can also select a specific text feature by searching for the text string.

This means you can add and manage text features on Source usages and see these same features re-used later in products, like any other source feature.

It is recommended that you carefully review your workflows and assess whether you really want to compile text features in source. You should try it and decide if it fits your needs. It can save time for general text, toponyms and other items that apply from one chart to the next, but text features coming from source may require additional touch-ups once they are added to a panel. You may not be able to compile text in source so that it fits all products nicely.

Text features are subject to certification like any other feature.

Text formatting is applied using the Text toolbar. You can create text styles and re-use them for future text features.

Text is added against a point or along a line that you define by clicking on one or more points before you type the text:

One point: (point-justified) The text will straight and upright and as long as necessary. The point will mark the beginning, end, or centre of the text, depending on the justification setting.

Two points: The text will be straight and will follow the slope of the line. If the text is left or right justified or centred, the line will be extended to fit the text, if necessary. If the text is fully justified, it will be stretched or compressed to fit the length of the line.

Three or more points: The path of the text will be curved. Otherwise it will behave the same as two-point text.

Important notes regarding adding text in Source Editor:

Set the display in Source Editor to match the target product or chart. You must use the same portrayal, symbolization scale and projection as the targets to ensure that text will appear at the correct location and look right.

Note that you have set the symbolization scale each time.

Always check the toolbar settings before adding text. Toolbar settings are remembered from the last selected text and will be applied to any new text if you do not change them first.

Only point-justified text should be oriented to North Pole or South Pole. Curved text will be reduced to a straight line if oriented to anything other than Grid North.
